Bathing Beauties

Amy's in town so I took a half day on Monday to hang with her. We went for mani/pedi's at "'Finger Salon" in Westport. O-M-G. While you are sitting letting your nails dry under the dryer a lady will massage you for 20 minutes...I said 20 MINUTES!!! It was awesome. And for anyone who really knows me, you know I love to have my hair played with. Well this lady went to town on my scalp and hair. I looked like I came out of a wind tunnel. Get your butt down there ladies...it might be better than shopping or a big fat chocolate cake. ; )
So after we were all beautified we went to the beach for a couple of hours & chilled. It was gorgeous out. Later on we met Colleen for dinner at Stonebridge in Milford. I had a really nice day...which led me to think 'Why can't I work half day every day?????'

A little humpy humpy on the beach!!!

Weekend Activities/Fathers Day with Big G

John got home late Friday night from Chicago & so after being gone all week long we made sure we had a nice relaxing weekend. Saturday morning we hit some tag sales (crapola) and then stopped at Penfield Beach to see some sand sculptures. I love this town- there is so much that is offered and I really think John and I are starting to take advantage of all of it and really appreciate what a neat area we live in. Sunday we took Big G & Sue to the PGA Travelers Championship in Cromwell CT as a Fathers Day gift. Weather turned out to be beautiful and fun was had by all...although I think Sue had THE best day out of all of us..*wink wink*
(Cameras were not allowed so unfortunately I wasn't able to capture our day out).

I'm Going Green!

Did you know that every year we produce enough plastic film in this country to shrink-wrap Texas? Or that Americans discard 38 billion plastic water bottles every year? While plastic offers the advantages of being flexible and lightweight, it also consumes fossil resources for its manufacture and contributes waste in our environment. So I've decided to "Go Green" and stop using the plastic straws at work and replaced them with stainless steel reusable straws. I got 4 for $10 from www.cheftools.com. Baby steps people!

Here's some tips on Going Green & saving money in the process:

Save energy to save money.
Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
Unplug appliances when you're not using them. Or, use a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts "phantom" or "vampire" energy use.
Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. If you must use a dryer, consider adding dryer balls to cut drying time.

Save water to save money.
Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too.
Install a low-flow showerhead. They don't cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment.
Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet. These inexpensive appliances conserve heat and water, while keeping water pressure high.
Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your garden. Many plants need minimal watering. Find out which occur naturally in your area.

Less gas = more money (and better health!).
Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity.
Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work. Or move closer. Even if this means paying more rent, it could save you money in the long term.
Lobby your local government to increase spending on sidewalks and bike lanes. With little cost, these improvements can pay huge dividends in bettering your health and reducing traffic.

Eat smart.
If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy.
Watch videos about why local food and sustainable seafood are so great.
Whatever your diet, eat low on the food chain [pdf]. This is especially true for seafood.

Skip the bottled water.
Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste.
Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminum rather than plastic, with you when traveling or at work.
Check out this short article for the latest on bottled water trends.

Think before you buy.
Go online to find new or gently used secondhand products. Whether you've just moved or are looking to redecorate, consider a service like craigslist or FreeSharing to track down furniture, appliances, and other items cheaply or for free.
Check out garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment shops for clothing and other everyday items.
When making purchases, make sure you know what's "Good Stuff" and what isn't.
Watch a video about what happens when you buy things. Your purchases have a real impact, for better or worse.

Borrow instead of buying.
Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books.
Share power tools and other appliances. Get to know your neighbors while cutting down on the number of things cluttering your closet or garage.

Buy smart.
Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging.
Wear clothes that don't need to be dry-cleaned. This saves money and cuts down on toxic chemical use.
Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you'll be happy when you don't have to replace items as frequently (and this means less waste!).

Keep electronics out of the trash.
Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
Recycle your cell phone.
Ask your local government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.

Could They Be Any More Different?

This is what is left of the slice of pizza after Tortilla has eaten all the cheese off. She's no dummy- she goes for the good stuff.

Save a Life This Weekend!

My favorite organization Pet Rescue, is trying to rescue 15-20 dogs from a high kill shelter this weekend (6/27), where they would otherwise be euthanized. The dog in the photo is just one of the sweet faces whose lives we can save, but they need your help! To sponsor a dog's ticket to safety, the cost is only $30. To sponsor a dog's vet care, the cost is $100. Click here to donate: http://www.ny-petrescue.org/

For Ha Ha's

This is a cd cover my friend "V" helped me create for a birthday gift for John. I made a massage gift certificate for him & put this pic in the front case of a relaxing spa cd.

The best part...the name tag. Love love love it.
And DAMN, my hair looks good. (If I do say so myself)

Father's Day

John had a 7:30am flight to Chicago on Sunday morning so us girls were on our own for Father's Day. We got up early & headed to Warwick to spend the day with Bobby O. We had a nice breakfast together & the dogs once again loved playing in the pond. I went scouring the Otterbein Estate for plants I could steal & came up with some Lilac shoots & a Peoni bush.- SCORE!

And Johns Birthday Continues!

Friday John & I both took a 1/2 day from work to continue his birthday celebrations and so we went to Super Duper Weenie for lunch. After seeing it on an episode on the Food Networks Diners, Drive In's and Dives last week John had been craving it. It was gooooood. We got the Chicagoan (get this if you go for sure!!), the New Englander and the Dixie. http://www.superduperweenie.com/index.html. Check out the clip that was on DDD and tell me if you could resist going there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJPpPmlxhs4

Then later that night we went to dinner at the Westbrook Lobster Restaurant in Wallingford for what else....lobster. Yum Yum. Then off we went to the Chevrolet Theater to see John Edward- the pyschic medium- http://www.johnedward.net/JOHN_EDWARD_2008/JE_home.html.
O-M-G. We are on the fence on whether or not he is legite but let me tell you, if he isn't really able to communicate with the dead he is AWESOME at his "job". It was amazing to see how he could make so many connections & pull things out of the air that fit with particular people. Nobody warned me I should bring tissues with me...I cried several times when he was communicating with some of the audience's dead relatives and/or friends. If John Edward is appearing anywhere near you I would highly recommend going to see him.

Mmmmm- that's the Chicagoan on the left.

Happy Guy! Oh yea, we splurged on the 2 pound lobsters!

Theeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yankees Lose

Last night we went to a Yankee game with Katie & Paul- their first time to a game!!! The Yankees lost to the Washington Nationals 3-2. I'd have to say the game was pretty boring with not much action going on but as always the crowd was fun. The new stadium appears much smaller than the old one but does have a lot more perks, that is for sure. The $10 beers are ridiculous but I guess if you only plan on going once or twice a year then it seems "okay" to splurge...right?

Guadagno's & Ritchie's at Yankee Stadium!!!

A Lazy Weekend

We had a really mellow weekend- which was great. Saturday morning we hit a bunch of tag sales..John was a trooper and was out for about 2 hours with me. Later on we took the dogs for a hike through the woods, I think this might be our new family weekend outing! Dinnertime we went to New Canaan to hit a Mexican restaurant called Tequila Mockingbird my hairdresser recommended (http://www.culinarymenus.com/tequilamockingbird.htm ). It was fabulous! The decor was gawdy in a fantastic way, the food was amazing & the service was great. We will defintely go back. Sunday was super lazy- I went to Goodwill while John putted around the house. We spent the rest of the day doing laundry and watching movies. FYI- you can rent movies from Red Box (in the grocery stores, outside gas stations, etc) for $1 each! Such an awesome deal considering it costs $5 to rent just one movie off of IO. I love saving money.

Here's John blowing out the back of the RR to get rid of all the dog hair. Its "ruff" having two dogs.

Tequila Mockingbird

See, it was a lazy day for the dogs too! They just sat on the front porch watching all the action in the neighborhood.

Movies we watched:
(this movie was filmed in CT- John & I had gone to Southport this past summer when they were filming parts of it but apparently those scenes never made the movie)
